Before MacArthur’s firing, generals could get away with publicly disagreeing with the commander-in-chief. After MacArthur’s firing, public dissent became grounds for a general’s termination.

In 2009, Barack Obama fired General Stanley McChrystal, Commander of U.S. forces in Afghanistan, for disparaging remarks made in a Rolling Stone interview.

In 1993, Major General Harold Campbell gave a speech at a banquet for the U.S. Air Force in the Netherlands. Campbell was heard referring to then-President Bill Clinton as a “gay-loving”, “pot smoking”, “draft-dodging”, and “skirt-chasing” President. These remarks sparked immediate controversy, quickly leading to Major General Campbell being fired from his position in the U.S. Air Force.
