THE

HU

NUMBERS SQUARED
James Binney
One plus two
will mystify most lovers. I
can never see that one alone makes thr.ee
nor wish it so. I think a four
'
is quite as fine a figure, or
a one if four won't do.
One hell or seven
hells are much too many:
I can dispense with all and b_e content;
and while I part with ·One or seven, 1
as gladly part with hells that men invent.
Let's speak again of One] ohn said that none had seen Him,
no, at no time. Let us then
love one another. God lives w'lzere
one love lives. Any land
in any clime which many men cqn love
is wide as world or even Paradise.

BREAKFAST
Robert M. HoweM
Breakfast is time
When consciousness
Regains control and harnesses the flow of facts
Down a rutted road.
And so,
With plans and counter plans,
Intended purposes and hopes.,
Pants and shirt and tie
Encase us in cocoon
Against the daytime world.

TME HUSK
A good man and a minister of God,
Who, when afflicted, bor:e his trouble _meekly,
Without complaint, until he saw his illness
A burden to. his wife and to his children.
Against the code tfiat sa-id it w.as a sin
To take a single life, however useless,
Yet in the ,name of any nation's greed
Could slaughter men by millions, 'he rebelled,
And took his life, while all the town ·cried, "Shame!"
John Markham knew that Arthur Peterson
Had loved. his family as he loved his God;
His dying aided where his life could not.
The note he left said simply: "Do not grieve.
The sin-if sin it be--is mine, not yours,
And I will settle it alone with God."
And there was timid little Jennie Carter
Who all her life had tended an old mother,
Crippled and crabbed, giving up J irri, th~ man
She might have married; and when that mother died,
''Went mad with grieving," so the neighbors said,
And drank a cup of poison. Markham came.
"Mother is gone," she whispered, "and Jim is gone.
..:
There's nothing any longer for ine here."
Markham agreed. He smiled .and took her hand.
.,.
He would not have kept her if he could.
And now the choice was his. Long months of pain
Lay just ahead. For him death would be easy.
He was not old; but useful life was through;
And none would suffer greatly at -his going ... . . .
But yet he was not sure. Not to face pain
Seemed somehow cowardly still. It was not fear
That stayed his hand. Indeed, there was in him
An eagerness to be gone-to see and know.
"Put out the light now, son, and go to ·sleep.
I am just here beyond the door" ..... .

"May or annihilation The phrase was dark, yet to his sleeping mind
Had borne a breathless meaning, implied choice. "Choose May-or choose annihilation"His conscious mind supplied, striving for sense.
May hac;I. been a symbol to him always
Of youth ~nd beauty, happiness and Jove-

The month of J.ilac trees and apple'-blossoms,
The Girl who stood to him for aJ.1 of these.
His mother died when he was still a boy;
The Girl one month before their wedding day.
But he was young; they said he would forget
And find another love-"Time heafa all wounds."
B1:1t he had not forgotten; yet he found
Time was, indeed, a wonderful physician.
Lost in his work, he bore his two-fold grief
As one may hear a lovely strain of music,
With quiet tears that keep the heart from hardening.
The choice, it seemed to him, was one of faith;
Where still was nothing proven, he could choose
To dream the dream that all the world had dreamed
Till reason conquered dreams-or he could choose
To think death was the end-annihilation.

"Put out tbe light" - - And should he shy from pain
And all the problems of a troubled world
He could no longer aid?
He'd made his peace with man; crossed from his books
All debts out-'standing; left his worldly wealth
Where it would do most good. Now it was time
A little moment to consider God.
Perhaps by listening at Heaven's keyholes,
He could discover some small grain of truth
To help men's faith fast dying in a world
That could not live when once that faith was gone.
John Markham turned from the now darkening room
To where the window framed the lilac-tree
'Slowly receding into th~ lavender
Of early evening. Above, a faint new moon
Shone palely there beside a single star.
The scene was one that wakened memories;
For she, who was a part of all his dreams,
Was like a frail new moon, l'ike apple-blossoms
And lilac trees in May ... , ..
And May was Spring's perfection, as she was Youth's.
Dying in Spring, she was eternally young,
And every new moon was to him reminder.
Her name was Mary. He had called her "May,"
And "Lunacita mia," Little Moon.
But little moons grew to maturity,

The moon was dead.; yet did it live in beauty.
It was a warning and a prophesy.

John Markham closed his eyes. He felt at peace,
Freed f;rom all pain or further questioning.
And now the darkened room seemed filled with light,
As if a door had opened suddenly.
He knew that he ,had touched the tip of tmth !
And through him ran a strange, exultant joy;
God .breathed above him; love filled aH his being.
Life was eternal-Death an incident.

IT IS ALL WORTH THE KEEPrING
It is all worth the keeping,
Worth the hoarding, worth the weepingMeetings and partings,
Sun music and -rain music and voices of people to hear.
It is all to be listened to with greed,
With quiGk eyes and live heart.
I keep ,repeating it is all worth the k~eping.
I must believe them worth the weeping,
The things that die, that quickly pass but once, they
Were worth the knowing well, _I must believe!
A laugh, a Word, a lo0k from broken eyes,
Each worth the memoryThough the answer wonderful is lost to me.
