THE HUSK

Cursing Frost
DAVID CWI

Each day,
Cursing nature,
I watch the ground frost,
Push up asphalt
Lai.d on the ground
Ji'or my driveway.
I dream of city homes.
The concrete walks,
They would not yield.
And thinking this,
I remember my city.
Big shouldered buildings
Hung with capes of glass
Or stainless steel
Shine in my eyes.
Their cabled nerves,
.Cavorting with a sewer system gut,
Lace behind, between, and overhead.
While elevatored responses,
Automatic and profound,
Answer the silent screams of those bacterial inside.
I see the evening·sun
Mirrored in the plate glass eyes.
Eyes that look out,
Never in.
Seeing this,
And remembering,
I bless the frost.
